What Are the Best Options for Dell VxRail Customers in 2026?

VxRail customers have five options: upgrade in place to VMware Cloud Foundation on VxRail, renegotiate VMware and extend the hardware, move to Dell Private Cloud on VMware, move to Nutanix AHV, or move to Azure Local. Three facts decide which one fits: how much VMware you plan to keep, when your renewal and hardware dates land, and how much operational change your team can absorb this year. Start with an inventory that has owners and dependencies, and the choice gets much clearer.

Why are VxRail customers re-evaluating now?

Broadcom's per-core VCF subscriptions changed the math on every VxRail renewal. Dell changed direction at the same time, and Michael Dell said so in an interview with CRN.

“VxRail is no longer a thing.”
- Michael Dell, in CRN

Dell still supports VxRail, but its investment and partner incentives now point to Dell Private Cloud: PowerEdge compute, external PowerStore or PowerFlex storage, and the Dell Automation Platform for lifecycle, often sold under APEX consumption pricing.

What are the options for moving off VxRail?

    1. Upgrade in place to VCF on VxRail
This is the lowest-change path. Dell and VMware published an in-place upgrade path to VCF 9.1 in June 2026, according to C4C, so your tools and runbooks stay the same. The Broadcom subscription continues, and the hardware refresh comes back later. Fits when: your nodes have life left and VMware is strategic.

    2. Renegotiate VMware and extend the hardware
Renegotiate the renewal, extend the nodes with third-party maintenance, and buy time for the larger decision. Go into the negotiation with accurate core counts, owners, and usage data. Tina Revelant covers that preparation in what to ask before committing to VCF 9. Fits when: the renewal is close and the destination is still open.

    3. Move to Dell Private Cloud and stay on VMware
Replace VxRail with compute and storage that scale independently, keep vSphere for the first move, and decide on the hypervisor later. The engineering work lands in three places: storage design on the external array, network parity, and retargeting anything wired into VxRail Manager. VMware licensing continues, and the vSAN capacity bundled with VCF goes unused on external storage. Our technical breakdown of a VxRail migration covers each phase. Fits when: the hardware is due now and you want to keep the hypervisor decision open.

    4. Move to Nutanix AHV
Nutanix keeps the hyperconverged model VxRail teams already run, with AHV as the hypervisor. It runs on Dell Private Cloud with PowerFlex, on Dell XC Plus appliances, and on other validated hardware, and Nutanix Move handles the VM transfer from ESXi. Run the hypervisor change as a program: VM conversion, new runbooks, and updated backup and monitoring. Fits when: reducing VMware dependency is a goal and you want a familiar HCI model.

    5. Move to Azure Local

Azure Local brings Azure management and services into your data center through Azure Arc. Dell offers it on its own Azure Local systems and has announced support on Dell Private Cloud and PowerStore. Plan for VM conversion and an operating model built on Azure tooling. Fits when: the estate is Microsoft-centric and you want Azure services on-premises.

What do the cost claims actually compare?

Many published cost studies compare private cloud against public cloud, or against older HCI builds. The comparison you need is staying on VxRail versus moving, built from your own estate: core counts, storage capacity, renewal dates, and how long two environments will run side by side.

What should each leader weigh before choosing?

  • CIO: which option keeps the next move open? The answer balances modernization pace against cost pressure and compliance risk.
  • SVP or VP, IT Infrastructure: when do renewals and hardware dates land, and how long will two environments overlap? Parallel running drives spend, and renewal timing sets the budget cycle.
  • Solutions Architect: what changes in storage, networking, and tooling? That sets the design effort and the pilot plan.

Is your VxRail renewal already on the calendar?

VxRail 7.0.x reached end of life on September 30, 2025, and the choice to renew or exit is on the table now. The teams with the most options know their estate before the quote arrives. ReadyWorks gives your team that view and carries it through the whole program. On VirtualReady, ReadyAI plans the move with application context on every asset and stakeholders engaged at every phase. After cutover, StorageReady and ServerReady pick up the rest, from storage alerts to the last retired node.

Global partners and Fortune 100 customers use ReadyWorks to take months and millions out of infrastructure work. AI-planned. Expert-delivered. Talk to someone who has done this and see how it all fits together for your estate. A first conversation takes 15 to 30 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What are the alternatives to Dell VxRail?

VCF on VxRail through an in-place upgrade, renegotiating VMware and extending the hardware, Dell Private Cloud on VMware, Nutanix AHV, and Azure Local. They differ in how much hardware and hypervisor change they involve, and in whether the VMware subscription continues.

Is Dell VxRail end of life?

Not as a platform. Dell has said it will continue to support VxRail, and an upgrade path to VCF 9.1 exists. VxRail 7.0 code reached end of life around October 2025, and Dell's investment now points to Dell Private Cloud.

What is the difference between Dell Private Cloud and VxRail?

VxRail is an integrated hyperconverged appliance running vSphere and vSAN on PowerEdge nodes. Dell Private Cloud separates compute from external PowerStore or PowerFlex storage, uses the Dell Automation Platform for lifecycle, and supports VMware, Red Hat OpenShift, and Nutanix AHV, with Azure Local announced.

Should I stay on VxRail or move to Dell Private Cloud?

Stay if your nodes have life left and VMware is strategic. Move if the hardware is due and you want compute and storage to scale independently, with the hypervisor decision kept open. The technical breakdown covers what the migration involves.
